CHRISTOPHER NORTON
Principal Percussion

Chris Norton is familiar to NCO audiences as a longstanding member of the ensemble as well as a soloist on several occasions. He is Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to his appointment to the Belmont faculty in 2001, Chris taught at Western Kentucky University for fourteen years. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance from Louisiana State University and received the Performer's Certificate, Master of Arts, and Bachelor of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music. In addition to his position with the NCO, he performs regularly with the Nashville Symphony, the Bob Becker Ensemble, the Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band, and the orchestras of the Eastern Music Festival and the Peninsula Music Festival. His marimba CD, entitled Christopher Norton: Creston Concertino for Marimba, has as its centerpiece a collaboration with the NCO on this first complete orchestral recording of the Creston Concertina for Marimba. Chris also joined the NEXUS percussion ensemble as marimba soloist on the NCO’s commission and premiere of Conni Ellisor’s Sea Without A Shore, and as soloist on Ms. Ellisor’s NCO commissioned Concerto for Marimba and Latin Percussion.
