These are photos of the historic First Baptist Church, located at 108 Seventh Avenue South and Broadway in downtown Nashville, TN. The Sanctuary was designed by renowned architect Edwin A. Keeble and Associates. The theme of the beautiful stained glass windows was inspired by the late Dr. H. Franklin Paschall (1922-2009) and designed by Goode Paschall Davis. The theme of the windows is Divine Revelation. Dr. H. Franklin Paschall was a great asset in the design of the Sanctuary. The magnificent organ heard in this clip is a 1970 59-Rank Schantz Pipe Organ with 3236 pipes. The pipes vary in length from 3/8 inch to 32 feet. First Baptist Church, Nashville is getting ready in 2010 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of our beautiful Sanctuary and majestic pipe organ.
If you want to visit a truly Southern city that is growing leaps and bounds in size and cultural activities, then you might want to consider Nashville Tennessee. It is in the real heart of the South and has many different interesting and fun things to do, see, and hear. The city itself is lovely and there is no big city anywhere that will try harder to make you feel right at home.

When you visit Nashville you might want to consider staying at the luxurious Opryland Hotel Indoor Gardens and Collections. The greenery alone inside this place is breathtaking and lovely to walk through. There are three gardens to see where you can sit and relax and just enjoy the fountains and plants.

Almost anyone who knows anything about country music knows that Nashville is the country music capital of the world. You can go down to Music Row and visit many of the places that some of the greatest and most well known singers have gotten their start. Even today, there have music events in some of the smaller bars and lounges where you just might see some of your favorite country music artist giving a benefit concert or just stopping by.

While you are on Music Row you will have to stop into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Here you can learn all about some of the great singers of this style of music such as Hank Williams, George Jones, and so many more. If you love country music or music in general, you will not want to miss the chance to visit Music Row.

Nashville also has a great newer water park called Wave Country. This is one of the most fun filled activities for families. It features several great water slides and has a wave simulating pool that is huge. If you come in the summer time, you will surely want to spend a day soaking up some southern sun while your children splash and slide the day away.

There is the Cumberland Science Center that is also good clean family entertainment. The General Jackson Showboat is a nice change of pace to dine on a boat and be entertained at the same time. Nashville also has a new symphony and hall if you like music with a little more classic style.

When you visit Nashville, besides just the wonderful things to do in and around the city , you will probably want to just take a little drive around the beautiful countryside while you are there. It is truly the South at its very best.

Initially known as Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, “Minnesota Orchestra Hall” was founded by Emil Oberhoffer in 1903. Its name was changed to the existing one in 1968 and the orchestra was brought to the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis in the year of 1974. The first conductor of the orchestra was Oberhoffer who was the chief controller until 1922 and after controlling periods of several conductors, Osmo Vanska was appointed as the 10th conductor in 2002, who is now in charge of the orchestra.

The first recordings were done in 1924 including world’s first electrical recordings of Mahler’s Second Symphony along with Eugene Ormandy. After that in 1940 the orchestra combined with Columbia in order to make another major record under the instructions of Dimitri Mitropoulos and then in 1954 they created three popular ballets such as “Sleeping Beauty”, “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker” with leadership of Antal Dorati who also led the first recording of “Tchaikovsky” called “Overture”

Other most important recordings that were done in the Minnesota Orchestra Hall were the ones which were done for Vox Records label in 1970 with their then music director Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Also in the recent past the orchestra created some major recordings forth label of “Reference Recordings” with the direction of Eiji Oue in 1990. After that the orchestra has been doing recordings of Beethoven symphonies under the current label “BIS” from 2004 with the director “Osmo Vänskä” who is now conducting the Minnesota Orchestra Hall and its ninth symphony was nominated in the Grammy Awards 2007.

The other most important event conducted by the Orchestra Hall is its summer festival which was also well known as “Viennese Sommerfest”, “MusicFest” and now as the “Sommerfest”. The orchestra hall houses a series of concerts during four weeks in the midsummer and after each concert they offer free live music shows of various genres such as Jazz, Folk and polka. The Sommerfest in now directed by Andrew Litton since 2003 who got his post extended up to 2011 due to successful service.

On the other side, the Orchestra Hall is surrounded by many Minneapolis hotels that provide the great accommodation facilities in the region.

“There Is A Crack In Everything That’s How The Light Gets In.” – Leonard Cohen

Shaun Nishmas

Good morning, faculty members and students.

Let me start by saying that I am very proud to be addressing such a distinguished audience.

We have gathered here today to celebrate imperfection. Yes, I said imperfection, not perfection. Today I will be talking to you about imperfection and knowledge—and how each thrives on the other. During this meeting, I will take the position that in a perfect world, you cannot attain knowledge. Only in an imperfect world can knowledge thrive. That is why we should celebrate imperfection.

Ask yourself: can you learn anything if everything were perfect?

Do we learn more when something is imperfect, or when something is perfect? I believe that we learn more when something is imperfect. If everything were perfect, all imperfections would be eliminated, and I mean ALL.

What is perfection?

The oldest definition of “perfection” is by Aristotle, a renowned Greek philosopher, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great. He once wrote about three different ways of looking at perfection:

1. Perfection is complete — that which contains all the requisite parts.

2. Perfection is so good that nothing of the kind could be better.

3. Perfection is that which has attained its purpose.

You might say that perfection is, broadly, a state of completeness and flawlessness. By definition, perfection would stop the pursuit of knowledge because there would be nothing left to pursue. We are talking about a state of completeness and flawlessness, after all. In other words, if everything were complete and flawless, there would be no need to learn anything.

In a perfect world, every story would have a happy ending, so we wouldn’t learn the lessons that come from sadness.

In a perfect world, we would all be New York Yankees, so we would never learn the lessons that come from the agony of defeat.

In a perfect world, everyone would be popular, so we would never learn the lessons that come from isolation and loneliness.

In a perfect world, nobody would die, so we would never learn the lessons that come from grief.

I can honestly argue that we would not need to learn anything because all our needs would be met…perfectly. So why question anything? Why bother?

So do we learn more if something is imperfect? I think so.

I would even venture to say that something needs to be imperfect before we can learn something. Even perfection isn’t perfect. Without the knowledge that comes from imperfection, perfection would cease to be perfect. According to Leonard Cohen, one of the most important and influential songwriters of the 20th century, “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

What does Leonard Cohen mean by the crack? I believe that it is imperfection. What is imperfection? If perfection is a state of completeness and flawlessness, then imperfection is a flawed, incomplete state that could only inspire perfection in the form of knowledge.

Unless the heart breaks, you would never learn about love.

Unless you’ve been wronged, you would never learn about what is right.

Unless you failed at something, you would never learn about success.

By recognizing the lessons that come from an imperfect world and learning from them, we attain personal growth and well-being. In other words, the “light” Leonard Cohen talks about.

The pathway to this light is not a perfectly straight line. There are many cracks in the road, each leading to a different truth. Hundreds, if not thousands, of truths, in fact. In an imperfect world, there’s no limit to how much you can learn…how much light can come into your life.

I hope the cracks in your world bring light to your life.

Thank you.

Ludwig Van Beethoven is widely regarded as the most original, intense and technical classical composers of all time. The strange fact that differentiates Beethoven from his contemporaries was that he was deaf for a longtime until his untimely demise.

Beethoven’s deafness was gradual as a result of a fever. It started showing major symptoms in his twenties and ultimately he lost all of his hearing in early thirties. This disability was directly related to his profession, passion and love of music as arts. It had dreadful effects on his life and once quoted in his letter to his brother. “But how humbled I feel when someone near me hears the distant sound of a flute, and I hear nothing; when someone hears a shepherd singing, and I hear nothing!” Devastated by this despair, The German Master even contemplated committing suicide but instead chose to continue composing.

He took some lessons from the great Mozart and Joseph Haydn and performed in his own concert in the beginning of 17th century. Later, due to his hearing disability he stopped performing on piano but his creativity and composing did not hamper and infact excelled eventually. He wrote nine symphonies during 1800-24 and widely acclaimed perfection status. His later works constitute five piano, violin, vocal music and opera including oratorios. His third symphony Erocia was written when he was completely deaf. Though widely regarded as a classicist, Eroica reflected the complexity of music’s romantic age.

His diversity and genius can be further envisioned when his imagination created masterpieces that labeled him as a true genius. He expanded the length of symphony and piano concerto, increasing the number of movements in the string and adding instruments like trombone contrabassoon, and the piccolo-to the orchestra; giving it an incredible depth and corresponding range. His daring piano compositions further elevated the status of the instrument which was then a considerably new instrument (invented in 1710). His most famous and performed masterpieces include Eroica (3rd), 5th, Pastrol (6th) and Choral (9th) symphonies, as well as 4th and 5th piano concertos.

It is astonishing that these invincible compositions were never ever heard by the master himself. When he used to give tempos to the conductor during the performances he would never ever hear the standing ovations from his audience. The choirs used to turn his chair to the crowd to let him know what a spectacular response his compositions used to draw from crowds.

Not only was Leonard Cohen a full time singer and songwriter he also has several other ‘hats’. He was a part time Buddhist monk as well as a poet. While his singing voice isn’t the greatest ever, he has a sort of bluesy moan that makes up for it.

Leonard Cohen really outdid himself. His live concert in London was amazing and his CD is full of pictures and consists of two discs of 26 songs. He seems to convey his troubles and feelings in a pleasantly lyrical way to his audience. He is a master at this sort of venue.

His album is a mix of both old and new songs, however getting a hold of his live material, unlike his studio CD’s can be a little bit harder. Usually the live tracks are placed at the end of an album or on side B. Take a look around and be sure not to miss these!

“The definitive live version” is what some of Cohen’s internet based fans have been calling some of his songs. The quality of sound is wonderful on his ‘Live in London’ album.

Cohen is backed by a silky-smooth band in guitarist Bob Meztger, bassist and bandleader Roscoe Beck (who has worked with Cohen since 1979), Neil Larson tickling the ivories, Rafael Bernardo Gayol at the drums and other percussion instruments, background singer Sharon Robinson and playing a variety of instrumental and vocal duties, the combination of sisters Charley and Hattie Webb and Dino Soldo.
